Hi!

\n This is a web page. Duh!

\n A web page is a file hosted on some computer, somewhere, that you can access.

\n We will discuss, later on, how exactly you access that file and where that file lives.

\n For now, know that this file is an HTML file.

\n HTML is a programming language that stands for \\\"HyperText Markup Language.\\\"

\n Tim Berners-Lee created HTML. He will be a hero of this class. He also came up with the World Wide Web! That's what the \\\"www.\\\" stands for in the URL to this Jippity project.\n

Thanks Tim! Without you, we'd be like cavemen, stumbling around and drooling in the cold.\n

An HTML file is basically just text, but certain *tags* give your Web Browser instructions.
\n For instance, take a look at the code that produces the text you are reading now.

\n What instruction — what tag — makes a new line of text?
\n
\n Try putting your own text in this section. Jippity will help you if anything goes wrong!\n

\n If you look at other HTML code around here, you will see some symbols and tags you might not recognize. Don't sweat it for now, but here are the most important tags to look for:\n

body
div
h1/h2/...
p

\n What do those do? Take a guess and peek around the code.
\n Notice the <......> symbols around tags. Can you describe the pattern for beginning and ending a section defined\n by a\n tag?\n

You should also get used to *comments*, which are pieces of text that do *not* run as HTML code. They are just\n for programmers to leave messages for themselves and others.\n \n

For instance, in the HTML file, right before this line, I left a comment. You can see it in the code editor, but not in the webpage itself.\n

What symbols do you need to type to turn text into a comment?

\\\"Commenting out\\\" a line of code is also useful to turn it off without actually deleting it. I did this near the top of this HTML file. Can you find that? What can you do to turn that code back on?\n

Text Styling

OK, but this looks pretty boring. I'll admit it. What if we want to make our text look better? Fonts?\n Colors?\n Size?\n
\n We can do this. If you have some text in a div, you can modify it by typing \\\"style = \\\" and then filling in the properties you want to change.\n

\n Officially, those style changes are not HTML, but CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), another language that works with HTML to format text and other web page elements.\n

\n HTML files can contain CSS, or they can read CSS from a separate file. Think of them as partners that work together. HTML is the *bones* of a web page; CSS is the *skin*.\n

Use the font-size and\n font-family properties:\n

This text is set to a size of 20px.

This text uses the Arial font.

\n\n

This text is 18px and uses Times\n New Roman.

This text is bold.

Use the strong tag to bold some text in a line. This is in bold. This\n ain't.

This text is italic.

This text is underlined.

This text is red.

This text is blue.

This text is green.

Play around for a minute! (With Jippity's help if you need it,) try some different fonts, sizes,\n colors, all that.

\n Can you figure out how to italicize just one word? Or do something real funky?\n

Image Upload

A picture is worth a thousand words. It's not hard to put images on web pages.

\n You can link to a picture online and have it pop up on your web page.

Here's centered dark green text above a picture of the great\n saxophonist Coleman Hawkins.

Replace that with your own image. You can even try to host an image from your own computer that's not\n online. You can save an .html file on your computer and run it without connecting to the Internet, by the\n way!

Ask Jippity to help you modify that image. Can you make it partially transparent? Or tint it blue? Or resize\n it...stretch it out...put it in a box with round corners?

\n Can you reposition it on the screen?

Hyperlinks

The \\\"H\\\" in \\\"HTML stands for \\\"Hypertext.\\\" The idea of hypertext is to expand the possibilities of plain ol'\n boring text. The most important expansion is the concept of Hyperlink, or \\\"link\\\" for\n short.

\n Links are text that you can click, sending you to another webpage. The entire World Wide Web is connected through links.\n
\n
Make a link with a simple tag — just the letter a! Then specify where the link goes with\n href = and the URL (uniform resource locator) of the page you want to link to.\n

Add or adjust some links. The target=\\\"_blank\\\" property means the link opens in a new tab.\n That's nice to include so you don't accidentally leave your working space.

Bonus question: what tag or combo of tags makes the bulleted list you see above?\n

`div` Structure

You will see the < div > tag all over the place in HTML. divs \\\"divide\\\" the page\n and break it\n up into sections.

\n If you want a chunk of your site to stick together, wrap it in div tags.\n

You can absolutely put divs inside other divs, too. That's happening in this very\n page!

\n Another useful trick with divs is to give a div an \\\"id\\\" or a \\\"class\\\" that allows you to\n reference it elsewhere in your HTML file. \\\"id\\\" is supposed to be unique, and \\\"class\\\" is to make a whole\n family of\n divs that share properties.\n

Check this out.\n

\n The \\\"id\\\" property gives a name to a certain div. This div is called\n \\\"uniqueSection.\\\"

Lower in the page, I make a link that sends us right back here.

Go find it downtown and click it.\n

Using \\\"class\\\" lets you modify many related divs at once.

This line is a basic div with the class \\\"example\\\".

This line is a different div with different text, but is also classed as\n \\\"example.\\\"

A little CSS can style every div classed as \\\"example\\\" all at once. Modify\n this CSS and notice how both divs change together.

We will have a chance to learn more about the ins and outs of HTML as we dig deeper into the web. But with just the\n basics — text, images, divs, and links — you can produce lovely webpages.

Notice that the entire HTML file is wrapped in \\\"html\\\" tags.

Your homework — no, wait, \\\"homework\\\" is lame — your first quest is to create a beautiful webpage\n using only HTML. No JavaScript, no separate CSS file. Use the basic ingredients we talked about today.

It can be a homepage, or a place to host a poem, or a little picture gallery...anything!

Maybe you can even figure out how to connect multiple pages... go nuts! Nothing is off-limits (except for\n JavaScript...for now.).\n
